Barrett Penan, CPA/ABV/CFF/PFS
Senior Managing Principal and Co-Founder
Barrett Penan is a native of Maryland having attended Spring Brook High School and the University of Maryland where he graduated with high honors. After a short period with the Defense Contract Audit Agency, Barrett found his true calling working for the Nation’s premier real estate focused CPA firm Kenneth Leventhal & Company. He then went on to be one of the first partners of the largest locally owned CPA firms in Maryland. In 1990 Barrett co-founded Penan & Scott, P.C.
Today, Barrett is a co-founder and senior principal at Penan & Scott, P.C. Barrett has total responsibility for sophisticated income tax, financial, and business planning for a multitude of diverse clients including real estate professionals, entrepreneurs, professional service firms and self-employed individuals. Barrett provides creative solutions for structuring real estate deals as well as business valuation and litigation support services.
James (Jim) Scott, Jr., CPA/CGMA
Senior Managing Principal and Co-Founder
Originally from Texas, James Scott, Jr. graduated with honors from the University of Baltimore with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He began his career with the U.S. Marine Corp, earning the rank of sergeant. After the Marines, he joined the large international accounting firm of Ernst & Young. In 1990 James co-founded Penan & Scott, P.C.
Today, James is a co-founder and senior principal of Penan & Scott, P.C. James advises government contractors and businesses of all sizes, including Medicaid service providers, real estate investors and general contractors on all types of tax and financial issues. He has significant experience with auditing financial statements of closely-held companies, structuring complex corporate and individual tax transactions, and negotiating financing for closely-held businesses.
Renée Kascic, CPA/ABV/CFF/PFS
Principal
Renée Kascic lived in many parts of the country before settling in Minnesota where she earned her BS in psychology. Her goal was always to help people. After moving to Maryland, Renée decided that the best way to do this was in the world of finance. Therefore she went back to school and earned her CPA. She joined Penan & Scott, P.C. in 1995.
Today, Renée is a principal at Penan & Scott, P.C. Renée has total responsibility for sophisticated income tax, financial, and valuation consulting, economic analysis and financial advisory services, and business planning for many diverse types of clients. She simultaneously plans, supervises and administers financial statement and tax engagements for clients of all sizes and business types. Renée also provides business valuation and litigation support services.
Meg Mouser, CPA/PFS
Principal
Meg Mouser grew up in South Bend, Indiana, and now resides in Montgomery County, Maryland. She earned her accounting degree from The American University and her master’s in Information Technology from Hood College. She was first introduced to the accounting firm of Penan & Scott, P.C. while working as a controller for one of its clients. She joined the firm in January 2000.
Today, as a principal at Penan & Scott, P.C., Meg specializes in business and individual income tax compliance, financial consulting, and overseeing financial statement engagements. In addition to providing tax-saving strategies to her domestic clients, Meg is also knowledgeable in international tax reporting.
Solai Nagappan, CPA
Principal
Solai is a Principal at Penan & Scott, P.C. and has over 25 years of experience in public accounting. In her capacity as a Principal, Solai will work with various business performing audits, reviews and compilations of financial statements and tax returns. She performs tax engagements for domestic and international clients. Her core clients are Medicaid service providers, health care providers, non-profits and small fast growing businesses.
Solai is a member of the American Institute of Public accountants and the Virginia Board of Accountancy.
Shawn Talley, CPA
Principal
Shawn was born and raised in Southwest Florida. He earned his accounting degree and Masters of Professional Accountancy (Tax) from Clemson University in South Carolina before relocating to Cape Coral, Florida. There, Shawn began his career in public accounting. Looking for a change of pace (and weather), Shawn and his family moved to the DC Metro area in 2002 and spent three years with one of the oldest public accounting firms in the area before joining Penan & Scott, P.C. in 2005.
Today, as a principal at Penan & Scott, P.C., Shawn assists business and individual clients in all aspects of their tax and financial planning. Although a large portion of Shawn’s client base is related to real estate, including residential and commercial owners, developers, brokers and various construction contractors, he also provides needed tax and financial statement services to a variety of other entrepreneurs, both locally and nationally. Shawn also assists clients with capital transactions.
